There was a M3.7 very early this morning in the high desert, 19 miles
west-southwest of Ludlow. The time was 1:31 am & the quake was felt
in the Big Bear/Lake Arrowhead areas. The epicenter of this quake
coincides with a small, subsidiary fault in the Landers rupture
(June 1992), so it could be considered a Landers aftershock. (Landers
was a Mw7.3 quake, and could easily have occasional aftershocks 10
years later. In fact, one can often trace it’s faint aftershock
sequence on current weekly maps.)

We had another small quake at 10:37 am this morning: a M2.9 located in the Anza Borrego Desert area, 17 miles south-southwest of
Ocotillo Wells, or 24 miles east-southeast of Julian. It’s sort of
an isolated area, so we may not get any “felt reports”.
Commentary
Two small quakes were felt in southern California over the weekend.
The first occurred just slightly offshore, 3 miles west of Leo
Carrillo State Beach, at 5:08 pm on Friday. Magnitude was M2.7.
It was reported felt in Newbury Park.
The second small quake occurred late Saturday, at 10:47 pm, 4 miles
north of Fontana. Magnitude was M2.6. It was felt in Rancho
Cucamonga, Rialto & Alta Loma. This quake was an aftershock of
Wednesday’s M3.7 at the same location.

Commentary
Yesterday at 5:43pm quite a few people in San Bernardino and Riverside counties shook from a M3.7 earthquake that occurred 4 miles north of Fontana. It occurred along the northern end of the San Jacinto fault, but since the quake was too small to cause any defining surface rupturing we can’t be positive in naming the guilty fault. The focal mechanism shows that (whichever fault it was) it had basically strike-slip movement, meaning that the ground moved (for the most part) horizontally rather than vertically. A quake this size is expected to cause light to moderate shaking with very little or no damage.

Another small quake of interest occurred at 8:15 am this morning,
23 miles southwest of Ridgecrest, near the Garlock fault. The
magnitude was M2.7. It was probably felt in the California City and
Ridgecrest areas, but so far we have no reports.
There was another, M3.1, in central California at 11:53 am. This
quake (according the Menlo Park) was located 16 miles south of
Kettleman City, or 31 miles southeast of Coalinga.
