A (preliminary) M4.5 aftershock to the Hector Mines earthquake (Mw 7.1, October 16, 1999) occurred this morning at 6:16 am and was felt widely across San Bernardino county; from Baker to Victorville to Twentynine Palms. The aftershock was located 8 miles northwest of Ludlow (or 34 miles south-soutwest of Baker) and occurred in the northern region of the Hector Mines aftershock zone. The focal mechanism showed mostly strike-slip movement along the fault with some slight vertical offset. The last time we had an aftershock of this size was over two years ago in June of 2000. It took place in the same general location as today’s earthquake and was also a M4.5.

Surprisingly enough there were no inquiries or “felt” reports about the M2.9 earthquake that occurred 5 miles north-northeast of Lake Arrowhead at 11:37 am. This earthquake is about 13 miles west of the M3.6 earthquake that shook Big Bear City Tuesday afternoon.

There has been a M3.6 quake in the Anza area this morning … at 10:18 am. The epicenter was located 6 miles southeast of the town of Anza. It was reported felt in the Anza area, as well as the Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage areas & as far west as Temecula & Fallbrook. There is a preliminary focal mechanism, indicating strike-slip motion, but not with the same strike as the San Jacinto fault. If correct, this means that some adjacent minor fault would be responsible. Numerous small aftershocks are being recorded.

Today there were a pair of earthquakes greater than M3.0 though neither of them were reported as being felt. This came as no great surprise since their locations are pretty remote. The first quake, a M3.2, occurred at 1:21pm 20 miles southeast of the (southeast) tip of San Clemente Island. Then tonight at 8:26 pm a M3.1 occurred 11 miles east-southeast of Anza.
