Commentary
Two small members of the Arvin sequence, a M2.9 at 6:19 pm and a M3.0 at 6:21 pm, were felt in Bear Valley Springs & California City early yesterday evening. As with the others, these quakes occurred 12 miles northeast of Arvin.
Readers should note that the Arvin swarm is not unprecedented. In late 1983 & early 1984, the Durwood swarm, 20 miles north of Lake Isabella, went on for about 6 months. The largest event in the Durwood swarm was M4.5.

Commentary
Yesterday afternoon, at 1:48 pm, a small quake was felt in the Santa Maria area (with a couple of isolated reports from Santa Barbara & San Simeon). The epicenter was located 5 miles south of Santa Maria & the magnitude was M2.6.

Commentary
We had another pair of twin quakes in the Arvin area (12 miles NE of Arvin, near Caliente). There was a M3.7 (later updated to M3.9) quake at 1:11 am followed by a M4.2 (later updated to M4.5) quake just five minutes later at 1:16 am. Both events were reported felt in the Bakersfield & Tehachapi areas. The larger of the two showed a peak intensity of Modified Mercalli V in the epicentral area & stimulated sporadic “felt reports” from as far away as Santa Monica. So far, these are the largest quakes of a continuing swarm in the Arvin area (which also produced a pair of M3.6 events on January 2). The focal mechanism for the M4.5 is thrust.

Commentary
There were some very sensitive people in the Culver City area yesterday: we got several “felt” calls on a M1.9 at 5:09 pm, located 1 mile northeast of Culver City, in the Baldwin Hills. The reports came from Culver City & portions of Los Angeles.

FELT IN SANTA MONICA, VENICE, AND SURROUNDING BEACH COMMUNITIES
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
January 22, 2003
Commentary
A quake was felt in the Santa Monica & Venice areas & other beach communities at 12:28 pm today (just after noon). It was a M3.0, which occurred offshore, 8 miles west-southwest of Los Angeles airport.
Commentary
Upon further inspection, the Cabazon quake yesterday evening was M2.6. The real-time computer was apparently confused by the waves coming in from the Mexico earthquake. Our M2.6 quake occurred at 6:29 pm, 6 miles north-northeast of Cabazon. It was felt in Palm Springs.
Commentary
Another quite small quake was felt by several people early this morning in the Santa Maria area. It was a M2.1 at 4:27 am, located 8 miles south of Santa Maria.
