The latest Big Bear aftershock was a M4.0 overnight, at 9:00 pm last night, at the same location as the rest, 3 miles north-northeast of Big Bear City. You may not be able to see it in the “Recent Earthquakes” map, but the aftershock locations are lining up on a north-northwest to south-southeast direction (called “strike” in geology terms). This line-up is part of the evidence that leads us to tentatively assign the sequence to the Helendale fault, which has the same strike. Last night’s quake was on the south-southeasternly end. It was widely felt in the Inland Empire.

Another Big Bear area aftershock was felt at 5:45 pm yesterday. It had a magnitude of M3.6 & was located 5 miles north of Big Bear City. It was felt in the Big Bear & Lucerne Valley areas.

A moderate (ML4.6) aftershock in the Big Bear City sequence occurred yestertday evening at 8:03 pm. This epicenter was located 4 miles north of Big Bear City. It was widely felt in the Inland Empire, and as far away as Orange County & Palmdale & Lancaster. There have also been 7 more M3+ aftershocks since the M4.5 at 11:33 am on Saturday.

In addition, there was a M3.2 near Borrego Springs at 3:06 pm yesterday. The epicenter was 14 miles north-northwest of Borrego Springs. It was felt in the Anza area.

Here is a short summary of the aftershock sequence so far: in addition to the ML5.4, there have been five quakes larger than M4 & eight additional ones larger than M3. The largest aftershock is a M4.5 at 11:35 am today, in the same area 3 miles north of Big Bear City.

Analysis of this morning’s ML5.4 earthquake indicate a strike-slip focal mechanism, with a strike consistent with the nearby Helendale fault. We cannot say for certain that the quake was on that fault unless there is surface rupture observed, but the evidence seems consistent.

At 4:19 am this morning, a M5.4 quake in the San Bernardino Mtns. was widely felt in the Inland Empire & greater Los Angeles. The peak intensity reported is Modified Mercalli V. So far, there have been 9 aftershocks of M3.0 or larger, the largest of which was a M4.5 at 4:20 am. All were centered 3 miles north of Big Bear City.

People in the South Bay towns of Manhattan Beach & El Segundo reported a very small quake yesterday evening. It was, in fact, a M2.3 located just offshore 3 miles west of Manhattan Beach. The time was 7:33 pm.

A second M3 class earthquake (this one M3.1) occurred a few seconds before 1:01 pm today, also 17 miles south-southeast of Taft. Like this morning’s quake, this one is near the San Andreas fault. It was also felt in Pine Mountain & Maricopa.
