Commentary

Several earthquakes of feelable size occurred over the weekend:

First, there was a M3.4 at 5:59 pm on Friday, located 5 miles north-northwest of Simi Valley. It was felt widely in the Simi Valley, western San Fernando Valley, and the Thousand Oaks/Newbury Park area, as far south as El Segundo & as far east as Glendale. Peak intensity was Modified Mercalli level III.

There was also a M2.9 at 1:23 am on Saturday, located 19 miles south of Taft, or 31 miles west of Frazier Park. We would not expect to get “felt reports” on this quake, due to its remote location.

Another possible feelable quake occurred at 7:32 pm on Saturday. It was a M3.0, located 11 miles east-northeast of Indio. It might have been felt in Indio or Mecca, but we have no reports.

Another M3.0 occurred at 5:20 pm on Sunday, this time 2 miles east-northeast of Obsidian Butte, in the northern Imperial Valley. This quake would have been noticable in Westmorland/Calipatria area.

There appears to be a small earthquake swarm developing just south of the U.S./Mexico border, near the Imperial Valley. The largest so far was a M3.7 at 10:03 am this morning. It was felt in Calexico & El Centro, also in Yuma AZ.
