Yesterday at 5:07 pm, there was a M2.9 quake located 3 miles northwest of Malibu. This quake was originally reported as a M3.0; actually the final result was M2.94, so a slight increase in the number of readings used for the magnitude got it rounded down instead of up. Whatever the magnitude, the quake was felt in the Calabasas, Agoura Hills areas, Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks & nearby communities. The peak intensity was Modified Mercally III.

There was another in Simi Valley at 5:50 am this morning, a magnitude M2.6. It occurred about 1 mile north-northwest of Simi Valley & was felt in Simi Valley. There have been 6 quakes in this series, the largest one of course being the M3.6 yesterday.

We also saw a M2.7 this morning, under the southeastern end of the Salton Sea, 3 miles north-northeast of Obsidian Butte. This area is part of the Brawley Seismic Zone, which is a common source of small earthquakes. The time on today’s quake was 7:03 am.

At 3:44 pm today, there was a M3.7 about 1 mile north of Simi Valley, in the same location where the earlier quakes occurred today. There have been more than 900 (and growing) “felt reports” on the CIIM website (”Did You Feel It?” link above), indicating a peak intensity of Modified Mercalli IV in Simi Valley. The quake was felt as far away as Pasadena, the Santa Monica area & Castaic.

We had another small quake this morning: a M2.8 under Simi Valley. It was felt in the Simi Valley & Thousand Oaks area. The time was 8:36 am this morning. Between the Hector Mines quake last night & this one, we are getting a pretty good survey of which of our seismic stations are still working.

Commentary

There was a M3.0 Hector Mines quake at 11:18 pm last night. The epicenter was located 9 miles west-southwest of Ludlow. The quake was probably not felt, due to its remote location.

There was a M3.1 early this morning near Ocotillo Wells, west of the Imperial Valley. The time was 3:11 am & the epicenter was located in the complex San Jacinto fault zone 14 miles east-southeast of Ocotillo Wells. The ShakeMap indicates that the peak instrumental intensity should have been about Modified Mercalli III near the southwestern shore of the Salton Sea, but we have not received any actual “felt reports” yet.
