At 12:18 pm on Sunday, there was a ML2.5 quake felt in the Culver City area. It was located 2 miles southwest of the Baldwin Hills, in or near the complex Newport-Inglewood fault zone. This quake was initially located by our automatic software to be just offshore of Santa Monica, with a magnitude of ML2.7, illustrating that “robots” are not perfect. Seismograms contain a fair amount of “noise” in addition to the earthquake records, including disturbances due to traffic, wind blowing on structures & trees, etc. Sometimes the automatic “P-picker” (which picks the P waves & the S waves, too) has trouble telling the difference, thus throwing the location off a bit. Yesterday’s quake was felt in the West L.A. area, Santa Monica, Culver City and Beverly Hills.

Residents of the Hemet, Idyllwild and Palm Springs areas felt a ML3.1 quake last night at 11:04 pm. The epicenter was located in the complex San Jacinto fault zone 7 miles south of Idyllwild. It was followed by more than 15 tiny aftershocks, many of which are so small that they are mislocated by the automatic software. This produces a false scattering on the “Recent Earthquake Activity” maps. Check the web site again this afternoon & they should all have their correct locations.
