2004 ARVIN EARTHQUAKE SUMMARY

A Mw5.0 earthquake occurred in southern California on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 3:54 p.m. located 17 miles northeast of Arvin in the southern Sierra Nevada. Because this occurred just over a day and less than 200 km southeast of the Mw6.0 Parkfield earthquake, there may be a correlation between the events. We have in the past, such as July 1986 and June-July 1992, seen multiple occurrences of moderate to large earthquakes over wide areas of California.

The proximity of these two earthquakes in time and space, while not completely understood, is consistent with our growing understanding that earthquakes can sometimes be triggered by other earthquakes. Because investigations of triggered earthquakes remain in their infancy, we cannot quantify precise probabilities of further triggered events beyond saying “very low.” The precise nature of the relationship (if any) between the two earthquakes is also unclear, and may be illuminated by future in-depth analysis of the data. As with any M5.0 earthquake, however, the Mw5.0 mainshock has begun generating its own local aftershocks.

The Mw5.0 had a strike-slip focal mechanism, with left-lateral motion on a nodal plane striking N65W. This is opposite motion to what is normally observed for San Andreas type earthquakes. The depth of the event is about 6.5 km.

These earthquakes accommodate crustal thinning within the southern Sierra Nevada. Extension occurs in both north-south and east-west direction, causing gradual oblate flattening of the range. The extensional deformation is associated with areas of high potential energy, and may be seismic expression of buoyancy-driven thinning of the Sierran lithosphere.

This earthquake today occurred about 8 km to the north of a M4.3 earthquake that occurred 25 January 2003. The 2003 M4.3 event was part of a large swarm of earthquakes that consisted of more than 1000 smaller events.

At 3:54pm local time, we had a M5.0 earthquake 17 miles NE of Arvin, CA. This is a new earthquake, and not an aftershock to the M6.0 Parkfield earthquake. This event was felt as far away as Las Vegas, Sacramento, and San Bernardino County. To see the ShakeMap for this event, please click here. The quake that is tied for the largest Parkfield aftershock has just occurred, a Mw5.0 at 10:10 am. A quick glance at the CIIM web site show it was felt as far as San Jose, Merced & Porterville. It appears to be close to the northwestern end of the rupture zone & the focal mechanism appears to be strike-slip, like the Mw6.0 mainshock & like most San Andreas earthquakes.

We now know quite a bit more about yesterday’s Mw6.0 earthquake. It seems to be almost an exact repeat, in reverse, of the 1966 Parkfield earthquake (the last one). In other words, yesterday’s ruptured from southeast to northwest, while the 1966 quake ruptured the same section of the San Andreas fault, going the other direction. Yesterday, the probability of an event larger than 6.0 was estimated at 5 to 10%, but since the risk decays exponentially, it should be much lower today. There have been seven similar historical Parkfield earthquakes. The first one, in 1857, occurred about 12 hours before the Mw7.9 Ft. Tejon earthquake, which ruptured the San Andreas fault from Parkfield to the Cajon Pass. The other five were not followed by larger earthquakes.

Yesterday’s quake was the long-anticipated (on the basis of seismic history) Parkfield earthquake. Because of the density of instrumentation in the area, this quake may be the most closely observed earthquake ever!

At 10:15 am this morning, there was a Mw6.0 quake in the Parkfield area. It was followed at 10:19 by a Mw5.0, plus a number of other feelable aftershocks. These quakes are in the region monitored by the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, but we will continue to post their latest information on this site. The Community Internet Intensity Web Site indicates reports from as far as Orange County.
