A ML2.9 quake was felt yesterday afternoon at 2:48 pm, in the northern Orange County areas: Yorba Linda, Fullerton, Orange, Anaheim, Santa Ana, etc. as well as Whittier, La Habra, Chino & Ontario. The epicenter was located 3 miles southeast of La Habra.

Early this morning, there was a ML4.0 quake near Coalinga. This is in the area covered by Northern California, but we mention it because of its size. The time was 5:03 am & the quake was located 5 miles east-northeast of Avenal or 9 miles east-southeast of Coalinga.

January 12, 2005

Just after midnight, a light quake shook the desert. At 12:10 am, there was a ML4.3 event located 6 miles east of Desert Hot Springs. The focal mechanism shows strike-slip motion, with a strike consistent with a series of small faults to the east of the San Andreas. The quake was reported felt as far west as the Inland Empire & as far southwest as Temecula. All aftershocks so far have been less than magnitude 2.0.

There was also a ML2.7 in the Inland Empire at 5:49 pm yesterday that was felt. It occurred 6 miles north-northeast of Beaumont.

A pair of ML2.8 quakes occurred in the Tehachapi Mtns. overnight, both about 1 mile southeast of Keene, or 15 miles northwest of Tehachapi. The first was at 6:47 pm last night & the other was at 12:37 am. Both were reported felt in Tehachapi, Bear Valley Springs & surrounding communities.

We appear to be having an earthquake swarm about 2 miles northeast of Fontana. The largest ones so far have been a ML3.1 at 12:49 am on Tuesday, ML3.6 at 4:11 am, ML3.3 at 6:22, and a ML4.4 at 6:35. All of these M3+ events have been felt throughout the Inland Empire. We will post more details later in the day.

At 4:11 this morning, there was a ML3.6 event located 2 miles NNE of Fontana. This is the second light quake to wake the area in the past few nights.

Another very small quake was felt yesterday evening, at 8:11 pm. This quake had a magnitude of ML2.2 & was located under the town of Hawthorne. It has been reported felt in El Segundo, Hermosa Beach, Lawndale, Manhattan Beach & Inglewood.
