ML4.0 Yucaipa aftershock

The largest aftershock of the June 16 Yucaipa earthquake occurred at at 3:17 pm today. The magnitude was ML4.0 & the epicenter was located 2 miles north-northeast of Yucaipa, very close to the Mw4.9 mainshock. Unlike the mainshock, however, today’s quake has a strike-slip focal mechanism. Today’s quake was widely felt from Orange County to the Mojave Desert.

Small Tehachapi area quake

At 9:36 am this morning, a ML3.1 quake was felt in Bear Valley Springs, Keene & Tehachapi. The epicenter was located 1 mile northeast of Bear Valley Springs, or 26 miles east-southeast of Bakersfield. There was a ML2.5 aftershock at 9:40 am.

Small Marina Del Rey quake

A ML2.8 quake occurred overnight, at 3:32 am & was felt along the coastal areas from Torrance to Santa Monica. The epicenter was in the Ballona Creek area 2 miles east of Marina Del Ray.

M3.4 Anza aftershock

At 8:24 this evening a M3.4 aftershock of the M5.2 Anza earthquake occurred 9 miles east-southeast of Anza. It was felt lightly in the epicentral area. To see a map showing the extent of reported shaking click here.

Mw4.9 Yucaipa Earthquake of 6/16/05

At 1:56 PM local time (PDT), there was a magnitude 4.9 eathquake located 2 miles northeast of Yucaipa, CA. This earthquake was felt sharply in the epicentral area and west to the San Gabriel Valley, and was felt as far away as Scottsdale, AZ to the east, the US/Mexico Border to the south, and Ridgecrest, CA to the north. June 15, 2005

M7.2 Earthquake off Northern California Coast, 90 Miles WSW of Eureka

At 7:50PM local time (PDT) last night (6/14/05), there was a M7.2 earthquake located 91 miles (147 km) WSW of Eureka, CA, off the coast of northern California. Although out of the SCSN network, this event was felt in portions of Southern California, and therefore will be included in the commentary. This earthquake was felt widely throughout OR, WA, and CA, and felt as far north as Seattle, WA, as far south as Los Angeles, CA, and as far east as Susanville, CA. The event focal mechanism shows evidence of horizontal strike slip motion, which is generally not the type of motion associated with tsunamigenesis (i.e. events that generate a tsunami). Tsunamigenesis usually involves some type of vertical ground motion of the sea floor, and generally occurs when significant uplift has occurred on the ocean floor, thereby displacing the water above, and in turn creating a tsunami.

This quake triggered the West Coast Tsunami Warning System to issue a tsunami watch for the west coast of the US, from British Columbia, Canada south to the California/Mexico border. A destructive tsunami was NOT generated, and therefore the tsunami watch was cancelled and an all-clear was issued soon after the original bulletin issued.

Mw5.2 Anza Earthquake of June 12, 2005

A Mw5.2 earthquake occurred at 8:41AM PDT, 6 miles ESE of Anza, CA. This earthquake was felt sharply in the epicentral area, and was felt as far away as Yuma, AZ to the east, Ventura/Santa Barbara to the north, and the US/Mexico border to the south (and into Baja California). It was located within the complicated San Jacinto fault zone, which is approximately 5 km wide, and is a member of the San Andreas fault zyztem. The hypocenter was located approximately 13.5 km (8.4 miles) deep.
