The swarm escalates

Filed under: Felt Earthquakes — duty @ 4:03 pm

The Obsidian Butte swarm is continuing this afternoon, with an escalation in the rate of small earthquakes & in the magnitudes that are occurring. At 2:49 pm & 3:17 mw, we saw a ML3.2 & an ML3.1. At 3:45 pm there was a ML3.4, followed closely by a pair of ML4.4 events. These occurred at 3:47 pm & 3:50 pm. All the locations are in the same area northeast of Obsidian Butte.

Swarms such as this are not uncommon in the Imperial Valley & similar sequences of events have occurred near Obsidian Butte.
