M4.2 San Clemente Island aftershock

Filed under: Felt Earthquakes, Significant Events — nick @ 2:58 am

A few felt reports are trickling in (from in and around San Diego) for the M4.2 earthquake that occurred at 1:51 am this morning. It’s (automatically derived) location is 19 miles southeast of San Clemente Island (from the SE tip) or 40 miles southeast from the NW tip — though the location may change slightly after a seismic analyst reviews it more thoroughly at a more decent hour.
This earthquake is considered to be an aftershock to the M4.9 San Clemente Island earthquake that occurred last Sunday afternoon.

Another Cabazon Earthquake, this one, a M4.4

Filed under: Felt Earthquakes, Significant Events — nick @ 1:20 am

Well, how is that for chances? So, technically speaking that makes the M4.0 earthquake that occurred near Cabazon roughly 3 and a half hours ago a foreshock to the M4.4 earthquake that just occurred at 12:31 am.
Both quakes had the same location, 6 miles north of Cabazon.
As expected this event was felt a little more widely than its 8:09 pm counterpart, mainly because it’s magnitude is slightly larger, but also because at this later hour more people are settled and more susceptible to feeling to ground shake.
We want to thank everybody for getting out of bed (at this hour) and filling out the “Did You Feel It” form. Your contribution is extremely helpful in determining the extent of the experienced shaking and your assistance is appreciated by all of us.

M4.0 Cabazon Earthquake

Filed under: Felt Earthquakes, Significant Events — nick @ 9:54 pm

The dinosaurs were stomping tonight. At 9:08 pm, there occurred a M4.0 earthquake located 6 miles north of Cabazon. It was felt as far north as Lucerne Valley and as far south as Warner Springs.
There have been two aftershocks so far (both below M2.0), and with an earthquake this size more are expected to follow — though the chances of one being larger than the mainshock is only about 5%.

Felt offshore M4.9 San Clemente Island quake.

Filed under: Felt Earthquakes, Significant Events — nick @ 3:39 pm

People from all the along the southern coast, from Santa Monica to the Mexican border, felt the M4.9 offshore earthquake that occured this afternoon at 2:11 pm. The earthquake was located 29 miles south-southeast from the south-east tip of San Clemente Island (49 miles from the north-west tip). Though it was felt over a widespread area, it wasn’t felt more than just “lightly”.
And by the way, offshore quakes normally have to be at least a magnitude 7 to generate tsuanamis. Needless to say this earthquake falls far short of that.
