2006 Quarterly Seismicity Report for the Southern California Seismic Network Portion of the CISN

Kate Hutton, Anthony Guarino, Joe Franck, and Nick Scheckel – California Institute of Technology, Seismological Laboratory
Southern California events processed & distributed:
During the reporting period (January 1 through March 31, 2006), we recorded & processed (K. Hutton, J. Franck, A. Guarino, N. Scheckel):

2,727 earthquakes (inside & just outside of our region) & quarry blasts, of which

  • 410 were magnitude 2.0 or larger, of which
  • 47 were magnitude 3.0 or larger, of which
  • 1 were magnitude 4.0 or larger.

The one magnitude 4+ quake is listed below:
Mag. Local date Local time Lat. Long. Depth Descriptive location
4.0 03/28 17:36:23 35 37.3 N 117 35.3 W 8.8 7 km (4 mi) E of Ridgecrest

Although the total number of earthquakes during this past quarter is comparable, slightly higher in fact, to the previous quarter, there was only one M4+ event. This China Lake area quake achieve MMI IV in Ridgecrest & Johannesburg. It was felt as far away as Lake Isabella (537 CIIM reports, many of which confuse it with a possible sonic boom event in the San Diego area).

The earthquakes that were felt by the most people included a ML2.9 near Lakewood on Feb. 4 (1,007 CIIM reports) and a ML3.4 on March 5, 3 miles west-northwest of Glen Avon (710 CIIM reports).
