The largest seismic event overnight was a ML3.1 that occurred at 3:55 am, in the Coso Range about 21 miles north of Ridgecrest. This is a remote area, so we got no reports of it having been felt.
People did feel an earthquake, however, at 11:31 pm in the Palos Verdes, South Bay & San Pedro areas. This quake was small, a ML2.3, with its epicenter 5 miles south-southeast of Rancho Palos Verdes Estates, or 10 miles south of Torrance.

There was a ML 4.0 earthquake this afternoon, located 7 miles west of Salton City, CA, near the Salton Sea. This quake was felt widely throughout the Coachella Valley (maximum intensity reported was III), and felt as far away as San Diego to the west (Modified Mercalli II), Palm Springs to the north (MMI=III), Thermal to the south (MMI III), and the epicentral area to the west (further west is much less populated desert). During the reporting period (July 1 through September 30, 2006), we
recorded & processed (K. Hutton, J. Franck, A. Guarino, N. Scheckel):
3,195 earthquakes (inside & just outside of our region) & quarry blasts, of which
446 were magnitude 2.0 or larger, of which
36 were magnitude 3.0 or larger, of which
1 were magnitude 4.0 or larger.
The magnitude 4+ quakes which were inside our coverage area are listed below:

4.0 2006/09/13 17:11:06 32 41.7 N 116 3.2 W 10.2 4 mi SW of Ocotillo
The seismic activity this quarter was unusually quiet. The single M4+ quake
occurred on Sept. 13, near the U.S./Mexico border, in eastern San Diego County.
Peak intensity was MMI V (two responders). The quake was felt as far away as
Imperial Valley & San Diego.
A ML3.8 quake on Jul. 9 was more widely felt. It occurred in the Inland
Empire, near the towns of Lakeview, Nuevo, Beaumont & Perris. The peak intensity
was MMI IV & the quake was felt from Orange Co. to Twentynine Palms. 1,873
people responded to the intensity survey (”Did You Feel It?”) web site.
Other earthquakes that were felt by the public include:

2.5 near El Segundo on Aug. 24
3.4 near Big Bear Lake on Aug. 26
3.6 near Desert Hot Springs on Sept. 2
