some activity!

Filed under: Felt Earthquakes, Uncategorized — kate @ 3:06 pm

Check out the “Recent Earthquakes” web site http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/latestfault.htm.

If you go to the “United States” link & include the two quake (4.8 & 4.5) offshore of Baja, I count six M4+ quakes in general West Coast area in the last four days.

11/26, Sunday, 2:11 pm – a M4.3 in the Mammoth Lakes area, with mostly very small aftershocks.

11/27, Monday, 8:06 pm – a ML4.1 near Paso Robles, perhaps a late aftershock of the San Simeon earthquake.

11/29, Wednesday, 7:34 am local – a M4.8 quake about 125 miles offshore of Baja, about halfway down the peninsula. There was a M4.5 aftershock at 2:15 pm local time this afternoon.

11/29, Wednesday, 1:10 pm – ML4.0 quake near Ocotillo (near the border between Imperial & San Diego Counties). There has been some decent swarm activity in that area lately, including a M3.8 at 4:17 am today. Aftershocks have included: M3.5 at 1:12 pm, M3.1 at 1:26 pm & 3.7 at 2:15 pm.

11/29, Wedneday, 1:20 pm – M4.0 3 miles west of Hollister.

We have seen “clumps” (not a technical term) of earthquakes at different locations in a short time period before, without any dire consequences. Look at May 1980 or July 1986 for more extreme examples than this. So it’s not alarming. But it is interesting, especially after the low activity we’ve had in the last months.

A record, maybe?

I have received two public “felt” reports for a M1.7 quake at 12:00 pm today, located 1 miles east of Covina. The two reports are from Covina & Glendora.

A few more quakes

Filed under: Uncategorized — kate @ 9:00 am

There have been a few more quakes on the fringes of our network in the past 24 hours. First, at 2:11 pm yesterday, people in the Mammoth Lakes area experienced a ML4.3 quake. It originated 15 miles south-southeast of Mammoth Lakes itself, in the Tom’s Place area.

At 6:23 pm yesterday, a ML3.0 quake occurred offshore, 20 miles southwest of Coronado. This quake might have been felt by San Diego residents, but we have received no reports so far.

And lastly, at 2:46 am today, a ML3.5 quake occurred offshore of Baja, about 41 miles south of San Ysidro. Its preliminary location was a bit farther north, so it showed on the “Recent Earthquakes” maps. It did not disappear, it just moved off the map when it was reprocessed this morning.

At 10:50 pm last night, there was a ML2.5 quake in Orance County that was felt in Anaheim, Placentia, Fullerton, Orange & surrounding areas. It was followed closely by five others, including a ML2.3 at 11:09 pm. All the epicenters were located 5 miles east of Anaheim.

Also last night, there was a ML3.5 in the Mojave Desert, about 9 miles north-northwest of Twentynine Palms. This quake occurred at 11:39 pm. We have not gotten any reports of this quake being felt.

L.A. County had their chance to shake when a M3.5 earthquake occurred at 11:43 am on Saturday, November 4. The quake was located 6 miles southeast of Mt. Baldy and was felt lightly in epicentral area. Click here to see the extent at which people experienced the shaking (or to report how you felt it). Notice how this earthquake was felt along a southwest – northeast trend. This corresponds with the readings we observed from the instruments as well as with the focal mechanism. This is a nice example of the “directionality” of a quake.

Friday morning (November 3) at 7:56 a M4.4 shook much of southern Southern California. Located 5 miles southwest of Ocotillo, the earthquake was felt along the southern coast cities and as north as Hemet. Click here to see (or add to) the distribution of felt reports. So far there have been three aftershocks above M3.0 from the Ocotillo quake.
