M3.3 Earthquake – 9 km (6 miles) W of Devore, CA

Filed under: Felt Earthquakes, Significant Events — Anthony Guarino @ 4:16 pm

At 3:56PM this afternoon, we had a M3.3 earthquake, located 9 km (6 miles) W of Devore, CA. We have felt reports throughout the Inland Empire, with some as far away as Redlands. There was also a M2.3 earthquake two minutes earlier, located in the Hawthorne area of the South Bay. This completely different event may have been felt in the epicentral area by a few people, as a few felt reports from Gardena and Los Angeles showed. Some felt reports from this small microquake may have been attributed to the Community Internet Intensity Map (CIIM) for the M3.3 Devore event. If you felt either event, you may differentiate the events by how the earthquake felt. If you live in the South Bay, for example, and you felt a small, quick jolt, this may be the M2.3 microquake. If you are in the southwestern portion of Los Angeles, and felt a slight rolling motion that lasted longer than one half-
second, you may have felt the M3.3 event. Either event would be difficult to feel in the South Bay area. You may fill out a CIIM survey to update the intensity map by navigating here: http://pasadena.wr.usgs.gov/shake/STORE/X10229069/ciim_display.html

2006 Fourth Quarter Seismicity Report

Filed under: Uncategorized — Anthony Guarino @ 1:13 pm

Southern California events processed & distributed:
During the reporting period (October 1 through December 31, 2006), we
recorded & processed (K. Hutton, J. Franck, A. Guarino, N. Scheckel):

2,609 earthquakes (inside & just outside of our region) & quarry
blasts, of which
411 were magnitude 2.0 or larger, of which
45 were magnitude 3.0 or larger, of which
6 were magnitude 4.0 or larger.

The magnitude 4+ quakes which were inside our coverage area are listed
below:

Like the that of the last quarter, the seismic activity this quarter was
unusually quiet.
Most of the M4+ earthquakes occurred at the southern end of the state & in
northern
Baja, Mexico.

Two, the largest at M4.4 & one of the M4.0’s, were part of on-going swarms
near the desert
town of Ocotillo. These swarms included over 200 events during October &
November. The
ML4.4 on November 3 was felt in the San Diego & Temecula areas, as well as
Imperial
Valley. The peak intensity was MMI IV in Ocotillo itself. The M4.0 on
November 29 was
reported felt by only a few people.

The M4.0 on December 23, in the Mecca Hills just east of the San Andreas
fault, was felt
in the Coachella & Imperial Valleys, as far north as Twentynine Palms. Peak
intensity
was MMI IV in part of Coachella Valley nearest the epicenter.

Other earthquakes that were felt by the public include:
M3.5 near Mt. Baldy on Nov. 4, felt in Inland Empire & Victorville areas.
M2.5 near Anaheim on Nov. 24, felt in northern Orange County.
M2.7 offshore of Palos Verdes Point on Dec. 4, felt in South Bay
communities.
