Here is Southern California’s contribuiton to the recent seismic activity in the Western US:
Last night at 8:55 pm, a ML4.2 quake occurred somewhere in the complex San Jacinto fault zone, 14 miles NNW of Borrego Springs. It was felt as far away as San Diego, El Centro & the Perris/Riverside area. As expected for this location, the focal mechanism was mostly strike slip.
At 1:11 am this moring, there was a ML4.4 quake in the mountains 12 miles SSE of Lake Isabella, which was felt in the surrounding region as far as Gorman & Palmdale. This focal mechanism was also strike slip, but with a somewhat more NS & EW orientation than we normally see in the major fault zones of California.
Activity has been somewhat higher than normal throughout the western US. Other events include a Mw5.4 at 8:03 pm on Tuesday, 11 miles ESE of Willow Creek in Northern California, a swarm located 6 miles W of Reno, the largest being a M4.7 at 11:40 pm on last Friday & a M5.1 quake 188 miles offshore of Vancouver Is. British Columbia at 2:17 pm on Sunday.
It is somewhat unusual for such different areas to be active during a short time period, but it is not un-heard-off. It is thought that the seismic waves & stress changes due to one decent sized earthquake is capable of triggering others, provided that the second quake is on the verge of happening anyway. So, one could say that the earthquakes of the last week are indirectly related, second or third cousins, say. No-one is anticipating a big family reunion soon, at least.
