Critical Users

The SCSN provides the data necessary for real-time seismic information and products such as CUBE, ShakeMap, ShakeCast and CISN Display. These information products were developed for critical users as tools to enable them to make informed and rapid decisions when an earthquake occurs:

  • In deployment of manpower into the field
  • Identifying damaged areas for response within 90 seconds
  • Monitoring utility and lifeline infrastructure and estimating impacts

Critical users of earthquake information (magnitude, location, time and intensity of shaking) are those who must make quick response decisions in an earthquake emergency in order to reduce losses. Critical users consist of lifeline and – utility operators, transportation, news agencies, media, and emergency managers.
