Education is an important means for SCSN to connect with the community, teach about earthquake safety, and help the public better understand how earthquakes occur. This is accomplished though a series of public lectures, hosted by Caltech and presented by the USGS Pasadena Field Office, which occur approximately once every few months. In addition to the public lectures, Caltech occasionally acknowledges requests for seismologists and other staff to speak at public schools, non-profit agencies (such as the Pasadena Branch of the Red Cross), and universities. Outreach to media outlets and large consumers of SCSN products is accomplished through the Earthquake Research Affiliates (ERA), which is a non-profit agency created by Caltech created to link the scientists to the public. To learn more about ERA, visit their website here.
Tours of the seismo lab are also available by request, and are targeted for elementary schools to learn more about how the seismo lab operates. To learn more, click here.
