Earthquake notification by email is done in several different ways. Inside the lab, the online systems will send mail directly to lab personnel. We also have several mailing lists that the systems will send mail to:

  • An internal distribution list
  • An external distribution list
  • The southern California public mailing list
  • The statewide public mailing list

The mailing lists are housed on a mail server that is actually four machines located in different cities for redundancy. The mailing list software is qmail and ezmlm, with additional tuning for maximum speed. There are currently about 10,000 people on the public mailing lists, so our mail servers have to be fast to send mail after an event.
