Mw5.1 Hector Mine Aftershock

Report by the California Integrated Seismic Network (Caltech/USGS) - Anthony Guarino, Egill Hauksson, Kate Hutton, Ellen Yu, Seismological Laboratory, Caltech, and Susan Hough, Ken Hudnut, Bob Dollar, Doug Given, Katherine Kendrick, and Morgan Page USGS.

Mw5.1 Hector Mine aftershock occurred at 8:18PM on 12/5/08, located 16 miles WNW of Ludlow, CA, and was felt over a wide area of Southern California. The CIIM Map below shows areas which generated felt reports, with the maximum intensity reaching IV near the epicentral region. The event was followed by 45 smaller aftershocks, the largest being a Ml3.5 at 15:39 on 12/07/08. So far, there have been 34 events Ml2.0 and greater, and 4 events Ml3.0 and greater (including the mainshock).

The moment tensor solution for this event shows right-lateral strike slip motion on a fault striking N108°W, dipping 82°NE. This is consistent with many northwest trending strike-slip faults in this area.
