24 Hour Forecast of Earthquake Aftershocks

This is a time-dependent map giving the probability of strong shaking at any location in California within the next 24-hours. For this purpose, strong shaking is defined as Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) VI, or the level of shaking that throws objects off shelves. The "Step" map below was released to the public last year, and is generated by the USGS every 15 minutes. Earthquake data collected by the Southern California Seismic Network are used in the modeling of the map below. STEP uses statistical models to determine aftershock probability, but does not take into account earthquake probability for "new" earthquakes. Once an earthquake has occurred, that event will change the statistical model for that area, increasing the likelihood of an aftershock.
